Somaliland President Departs Hargeisa for Washington, D.C., in Push for Wider Recognition

President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and a senior Somaliland delegation
departed Hargeisa on Thursday, September 3, for an official visit to
Washington, D.C., where they are expected to arrive Saturday. The
trip marks the President’s first visit to the United States since taking
office and comes as Somaliland’s decades-long campaign for international
recognition gains new momentum.

The visit follows Israel’s landmark decision in late 2025 to become the
first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an
independent, sovereign nation, a milestone that has energized Hargeisa’s
diplomatic outreach to Washington and other capitals. During his time in
the U.S. capital, President Abdullahi and his delegation are expected to
hold high-level meetings with members of the U.S. Congress, State
Department officials, policy experts, and representatives from leading
think tanks, with discussions centered on strengthening bilateral ties,
expanding economic cooperation, and addressing shared security priorities
in the Horn of Africa.

Somaliland has governed itself independently since 1991, maintaining its
own government, security forces, currency, and democratic institutions.
The American Somaliland Association for Development (ASAD) will continue
to follow the President’s visit and its implications for Somaliland’s
long-standing partnership with the United States.
