Climate-Smart Farming: The Low-Cost Practices Helping East African Farmers Beat the Drought

Across the Horn of Africa, more than half of cropland depends entirely on rainfall, which means a single delayed or failed rainy season can wipe out a year’s harvest. Agronomists working with smallholders in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somaliland increasingly point to a handful of low-cost, low-tech practices that measurably cut that risk — without requiring farmers to buy expensive new equipment.

The first is conservation agriculture: minimizing tillage, keeping crop residue on the soil surface instead of burning or clearing it, and rotating cereals with nitrogen-fixing legumes like cowpea or groundnut. Undisturbed, residue-covered soil holds water longer after rain and resists erosion during downpours, and FAO field programs have documented meaningful yield gains on plots that adopt it consistently over several seasons.

The second is water harvesting at the field level — small earthen basins known as zai pits, and contour bunds that follow the natural slope of the land. Both techniques concentrate scarce rainfall around the root zone rather than letting it run off, and both can be dug by hand, making them accessible to farmers without access to irrigation infrastructure.

The third is agroforestry: interplanting drought-hardy trees such as acacia or moringa alongside food crops. The trees provide shade that reduces soil-moisture loss, drop nitrogen-rich leaf litter that acts as free fertilizer, and give households a secondary source of fodder, fuelwood, or income when a grain harvest underperforms.

None of these practices is new, and none replaces the need for better seed varieties, credit, or storage that development groups have also been pushing across the region. But agricultural extension officers describe them as the fastest, cheapest layer of protection a farming household can add this season — work that starts with better use of the soil already in front of them, not a wait for outside investment to arrive.
