Turning Weather Forecasts Into Farming Advice, County by County

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), together with Kenya’s
meteorological department, just trained 56 agricultural and weather
officers from 14 Lake Region counties to translate raw climate forecasts
into plain-language advice on when to plant, irrigate, and treat for
pests. The gap the training closes is a common one across East Africa:
farmers often have no shortage of seeds or effort, but no reliable way to
know what the weather will do next season. Trained extension officers
will now carry that advisory directly to farmer groups and field
schools, turning a forecast sitting in a government office into a
decision a farmer can actually act on.
